It’s no secret that I am an avid reader. On average, I read about 100 books a year. I actually plan on publishing some articles that will help anyone interested in reading more to do so while at the same time, get more out of their reading.
But one concern I hear from others when I tell them how many books I read is that they think that it’s expensive. However, I’ll let you in on a secret. Most of the books I read, including new releases, I read for free. I’ll show you how!
For instance, it may seem a little old fashioned, but your local library is actually a great place for getting books for free, including current best sellers and other popular titles. The best part is you don’t even have to go there in person anymore. Once you have your library card, you can use that to check out eBooks without leaving your house.
Apps such as Libby allow you to use your library card number to login and check out eBooks on your phone device. You can read it through the app, link it to your Kindle app, or even read it on your Kindle device. On top of that, they also have a ton of free audiobooks available as well.
Another great resource for getting free books is Project Gutenburg. Many great classics are in the public domain due to their copyrights expiring. They currently have over 58,000 titles available, and you’d be surprised at the quality of some of the books that they have. For example, they have classics like Alice in Wonderland, Pride and Prejudice, The War of the Worlds, and Little Women.
If you have an Amazon Prime account, then you already have access to a huge number of books, comics, magazines, children’s books and not even know it. Under your account, look for Prime Reading. They have a few thousand books, magazines, and audiobooks available, and some of them are really great titles as well. One of my recent favorites that they currently offer is “7 Habits of Highly Effective People” by Steven Covey.
Kindle Unlimited is typically a paid subscription service, however if you keep an eye out, you can occasionally score Kindle Unlimited for free up to 3 months. That catalog is even more expansive than what is available in Prime Reading and has some great titles to read. One neat title I found on the service was a book about speed reading, which really did help me double the rate at which I read. (Just remember to cancel the membership before it auto-renews)
If you’ve been telling yourself to read more, there are plenty of ways to get started without spending a cent. You can go old school and check out physical books from the library, download eBooks from Libby or Project Gutenburg, or from Amazon. So go out there and explore all the great books out there that you’ve been meaning to read!
Note: At the time of this writing, most Kindle devices are currently being heavily discounted on Amazon https://amzn.to/2O8k6sH
